Extending the Original Position: Revisiting the Pattanaik Critique of Vickrey/Harsanyi Utilitarianism

نویسنده

چکیده

Harsanyi’s original position treats personal identity, upon which each individual’s utility depends, as risky. Pattanaik’s critique is related to the problem of scaling “state-dependent” von Neumann–Morgenstern utility when determining subjective probabilities. But a unique social welfare functional, incorporating both level and unit interpersonal comparisons, emerges from contemplating an “extended” original position allowing the probability of becoming each person to be chosen. Moreover, the paper suggests the relevance of a “Harsanyi ethical type space”, with types as both causes and objects of preference. ∗Department of Economics, University of Warwick, Coventry CV4 7AL, UK. e-mail: [email protected] “By nature, men are nearly alike; by practice, they get to be wide apart.” Confucius, Analects ch. 17 from www.analects.org.

Generalized Utilitarianism and Harsanyi ’ S Impartial Observer Theorem

We provide an axiomatization of generalized utilitarian social welfare functions in the context of Harsanyi’s impartial observer theorem. To do this, we reformulate Harsanyi’s problem such that lotteries over identity (accidents of birth) and lotteries over outcomes (life chances) are independent. We show how to accommodate (…rst) Diamond’s critique concerning fairness and (second) Pattanaik’s ...

A reconsideration of the Harsanyi-Sen-Weymark debate on utilitarianism

Harsanyi claimed that his Aggregation and Impartial Observer Theorems provide a justification for utilitarianism. This claim has been strongly resisted, notably by Sen and Weymark; the latter argue that Harsanyi has shown only that there exists a representation of the social preference ordering that is formally utilitarian in structure, not that utilitarianism itself is true. One prominent thre...

The Impartial Observer Theorem of Social Ethics

Following a long-standing philosophical tradition, impartiality is a distinctive and determining feature of moral judgments, especially in matters of distributive justice. This broad ethical tradition was revived in welfare economics by Vickrey, and above all, Harsanyi, under the form of the so-called Impartial Observer Theorem. The paper offers an analytical reconstruction of this argument and...

Measurement-Theoretic Foundations of Preference Aggregation Logic for Weighted Utilitarianism

Harsanyi [4, 5] develops expected utility theory of von Neumann and Morgenstern [21] to provide two formalizations of utilitarianism. Weymark [22, 23] refers to these results as Harsanyi’s Aggregation and Impartial Observer Theorems. In this paper, we are concerned only with Aggregation Theorem. Sen [6] argues that von Neumann-Morgenstern expected utility theory is an ordinal theory and, theref...

Contractarian Ethics and Harsanyi’s Two Justifications of Utilitarianism

Harsanyi defends utilitarianism by means of an axiomatic proof and by what he calls the ‘equiprobability model’. Both justifications of utilitarianism aim to show that utilitarian ethics can be derived from Bayesian rationality and some weak moral constraints on the reasoning of rational agents. I argue that, from the perspective of Bayesian agents, one of these constraints, the impersonality c...
